1 बुद्धिमान के तुल्य कौन है? और किसी बात का अर्थ कौन लगा सकता है? मनुष्य की बुद्धि के कारण उसका मुख चमकता, और उसके मुख की कठोरता दूर हो जाती है।
1 Who is as the wise man? and who knoweth the interpretation of a thing? a man's wisdom maketh his face to shine, and the boldness of his face shall be changed.
2 मैं तुझे सम्मति देता हूं कि परमेश्वर की शपथ के कारण राजा की आज्ञा मान।
2 I counsel thee to keep the king's commandment, and that in regard of the oath of God.
3 राजा के साम्हने से उतावली के साथ न लौटना और न बुरी बात पर हठ करना, क्योंकि वह जो कुछ चाहता है करता है।
3 Be not hasty to go out of his sight: stand not in an evil thing; for he doeth whatsoever pleaseth him.
4 क्योंकि राजा के वचन में तो सामर्थ्य रहती है, और कौन उस से कह सकता है कि तू क्या करता है?
4 Where the word of a king is, there is power: and who may say unto him, What doest thou?
5 जो आज्ञा को मानता है, वह जोखिम से बचेगा, और बुद्धिमान का मन समय और न्याय का भेद जानता है।
5 Whoso keepeth the commandment shall feel no evil thing: and a wise man's heart discerneth both time and judgment.
6 क्योंकि हर एक विषय का समय और नियम होता है, यद्यिप मनुष्य का दु:ख उसके लिये बहुत भारी होता है।
6 Because to every purpose there is time and judgment, therefore the misery of man is great upon him.
7 वह नहीं जानता कि क्या होने वाला है, और कब होगा? यह उसको कौन बता सकता है?
7 For he knoweth not that which shall be: for who can tell him when it shall be?
8 ऐसा कोई मनुष्य नहीं जिसका वश प्राण पर चले कि वह उसे निकलते समय रोक ले, और न कोई मृत्यु के दिन पर अधिकारी होता है; और न उसे लड़ाई से छृट्टी मिल सकती है, और न दुष्ट लोग अपनी दुष्टता के कारण बच सकते हैं।
8 There is no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power in the day of death: and there is no discharge in that war; neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it.
9 जितने काम धरती पर किए जाते हैं उन सब को ध्यानपूर्वक देखने में यह सब कुछ मैं ने देखा, और यह भी देखा कि एक मनुष्य दूसरे मनुष्य पर अधिकारी हो कर अपने ऊपर हानि लाता है॥
9 All this have I seen, and applied my heart unto every work that is done under the sun: there is a time wherein one man ruleth over another to his own hurt.
10 तब मैं ने दुष्टों को गाड़े जाते देखा; अर्थात उनकी तो कब्र बनी, परन्तु जिन्होंने ठीक काम किया था वे पवित्रस्थान से निकल गए और उनका स्मरण भी नगर में न रहा; यह भी व्यर्थ ही है।
10 And so I saw the wicked buried, who had come and gone from the place of the holy, and they were forgotten in the city where they had so done: this is also vanity.
11 बुरे काम के दण्ड की आज्ञा फुर्ती से नहीं दी जाती; इस कारण मनुष्यों का मन बुरा काम करने की इच्छा से भरा रहता है।
11 Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.
12 चाहे पापी सौ बार पाप करे अपने दिन भी बढ़ाए, तौभी मुझे निश्चय है कि जो परमेश्वर से डरते हैं और अपने तईं उसको सम्मुख जानकर भय से चलते हैं, उनका भला ही होगा;
12 Though a sinner do evil an hundred times, and his days be prolonged, yet surely I know that it shall be well with them that fear God, which fear before him:
13 परन्तु दुष्ट का भला नहीं होने का, और न उसकी जीवनरूपी छाया लम्बी होने पाएगी, क्योंकि वह परमेश्वर का भय नहीं मानता॥
13 But it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong his days, which are as a shadow; because he feareth not before God.
14 एक व्यर्थ बात पृथ्वी पर होती है, अर्थात ऐसे धर्मी हैं जिनकी वह दशा होती है जो दुष्टों की होनी चाहिये, और ऐसे दुष्ट हैं जिनकी वह दशा होती है हो धर्मियों की होनी चाहिये। मैं ने कह कि यह भी व्यर्थ ही है।
14 There is a vanity which is done upon the earth; that there be just men, unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there be wicked men, to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also is vanity.
15 तब मैं ने आनन्द को सराहा, क्योंकि सूर्य के नीचे मनुष्य के लिये खाने-पीने और आनन्द करने को छोड़ और कुछ भी अच्छा नहीं, क्योंकि यही उसके जीवन भर जो परमेश्वर उसके लिये धरती पर ठहराए, उसके परिश्रम में उसके संग बना रहेगा॥
15 Then I commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry: for that shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life, which God giveth him under the sun.
16 जब मैं ने बुद्धि प्राप्त करने और सब काम देखने के लिये जो पृथ्वी पर किए जाते हैं अपना मन लगाया, कि कैसे मनुष्य रात-दिन जागते रहते हैं;
16 When I applied mine heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the earth: (for also there is that neither day nor night seeth sleep with his eyes:)
17 तब मैं ने परमेश्वर का सारा काम देखा जो सूर्य के नीचे किया जाता है, उसकी थाह मनुष्य नहीं पा सकता। चाहे मनुष्य उसकी खोज में कितना भी परिश्रम करे, तौभी उसको न जान पाएगा; और यद्यिप बुद्धिमान कहे भी कि मैं उसे समझूंगा, तौभी वह उसे न पा सकेगा॥
17 Then I beheld all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because though a man labour to seek it out, yet he shall not find it; yea farther; though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it.
